A Legend Reflects on Life, Cinema, and Self-Discovery

Turkish cinema owes much of its golden era to legendary artists like Hülya Darcan, whose name symbolizes grace, strength, and timeless talent. From starring in over 75 films within four years to leaving the spotlight for nearly two decades to raise her family, Darcan’s story is one of passion, devotion, and inner balance.

Also known as the mother of acclaimed actress Bergüzar Korel, Hülya Darcan speaks with honesty about fame, choices, and the changing rhythms of womanhood — reminding us that authenticity never ages.

I Wish I Had Taken the Stage- A Gentle Regret

“Before marriage, I received many offers to sing on stage,” she recalls. “My voice was better than many who performed back then. I wish I had tried it. But I always said, ‘I’m a film actress.’”

Despite her early fame, Darcan’s loyalty was to cinema. Yet, she admits to a small regret — wondering what might have been if she had pursued music.

“My husband Tanju Korel didn’t want me to continue acting, and I accepted that. Those 17 years passed like water raising children, managing a home. Of course, I missed cinema deeply, but I made peace with it.”

For Darcan, it wasn’t sacrifice — it was a conscious choice rooted in love and family values. “Fame, luxury, money — all fade. What remains is family,” she says with conviction.

Embracing Peace and Perspective

When asked about her current stage in life, her answer radiates wisdom:

“I’m at a peaceful, joyful, and somewhat wise stage. I understand things better now. What I thought at 20 or 30 is completely different from how I think today. I’m more tolerant, less judgmental. I’m thankful — I’m content.”

“I used to judge people’s outfits or hairstyles. Now I say, ‘Good for her! She’s colorful and confident.’ That tolerance brings happiness.”

The Golden Years of Yeşilçam

Darcan’s early career was nothing short of extraordinary.

“There were days I worked on three film sets in a single day. I’d play a village girl with henna on her hands in one film, then rush to another to play a high-society lady — covering the henna with nail polish!”

During the Yeşilçam era, Turkish cinema produced around 350 films annually, and Darcan starred in 15 of them.

“It was exhausting but magical. We didn’t earn much — many producers didn’t pay. Only Cüneyt Arkın had a manager. Still, we worked out of passion, not for profit.”

That passion still defines her view of acting today.

On Art, Typecasting, and Courage

“Cinema is timeless. If you’re healthy and your mind is clear, you can act even at 100. But you must respect it, love it, and treat it as a real profession.”

Her frustration, however, lies in how the industry boxes people in.

“Producers are afraid to take risks. They put everyone into a box. I admire actors like Binnur Kaya, who broke out of comedy to play a powerful dramatic role in Kırmızı Oda. That’s courage.”

When asked what kind of role she’d accept today, she smiles:

“Anything but a ‘hanımağa.’ I’ve done that. That’s enough.”

Motherhood, Rules, and Love

Darcan’s views on parenting are refreshingly grounded.

“I wasn’t a relaxed mother. I had rules. My children never ate fast food. I cooked everything myself. I was a principled mother.”

Her daughters — including Bergüzar Korel — have inherited that same dedication. “Both are wonderful mothers,” she adds with pride.

And when asked about her grandchildren:

“I adore them. But if you ask me to choose between my children and grandchildren — children come first. Always.”

The Beauty of Aging Naturally

In a world obsessed with filters and perfection, Darcan stands out for embracing her authentic self.

“I have no plastic surgery. I used to criticize young people for getting it too early, but now I don’t mind. Everyone should do what makes them happy. I just prefer my natural self — my lines, wrinkles, and all.”

Her beauty routine? Simple and relatable.

“I drink lemon water every morning and use moisturizer because my skin is dry. That’s all. I love my natural lines — except the ones on my forehead,” she laughs. “Maybe I’ll get botox one day — but then, you can’t move your face!”

A Daughter of a Tightrope Walker

Darcan’s father’s story adds a poetic touch to her life narrative.

“My father saw a place called ‘Cambazhane’ and became mesmerized by the performers. He insisted on joining them and eventually became a professional tightrope walker. He even walked on a wire with his feet in tin cans!”

The irony of his fate still moves her.

“He loved his job so much. And ironically, he didn’t die doing that dangerous work — he died in a car accident. That’s the saddest part.”

Still in Demand

Despite decades in the business, Darcan is far from retiring.

“This year I received three offers. I’m currently in talks for one of them,” she reveals.

And who would play her in a film about her life?

“I never thought about it. I’m not much of a dreamer. Even for my wedding, when asked what kind of dress I wanted, I said, ‘I don’t know.’”

Her humility speaks volumes — proof that fame never clouded her sense of self.

A Living Legacy of Turkish Cinema

Hülya Darcan’s journey represents the essence of Turkish cinema’s golden era — a fusion of talent, resilience, and authenticity. Her reflections remind us that success isn’t measured by fame, but by fulfillment.

“Cinema seeps into your soul,” she says softly. “You never truly leave it — it stays with you forever.”
